Rooting froyo on your Samsung Intercept (sprint or VM) all credit to kuroyoma

1. The first thing you want to do is make sure that you have all the drivers (you can test it by plugging in the phone to the computer and trying to enter the phone’s SD card). If you do not have it go to this page http://andr0id-mazter.blogspot.com/2011/04/drivers-for-your-samsung-intercept.html or just go down in this same page to where it says “Drivers for your Samsung intercept”

2. After you have all the drivers then you have to download this file http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V4WMHCYE

3. After the download is finish you have to unzip the “InterceptFroyoRoot v0.2” folder with WinRAR, which you can download from here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=W2IO5HZ0 . To unzip it you just have to move the “InterceptFroyoRoot v0.2” folder to the desktop or any folder that you want

4. Now is the tricky part, your antivirus probably will detect the “rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin” archive as a threat to your computer, which is not, and will erase it. After you unzip the folder you have to make sure that “rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin” is in there because otherwise it won’t work. If the antivirus did erase the archive you have to disable the antivirus and then unzip the same folder again.

5. After everything is in place you have to enable debug mode in your phone and then connect it to the computer. To enable debug mode go to SETTINGS>APLICATIONS>DEVELOPMENT>USB debugging. When you connect the phone to the computer make sure that in the notification bar of the phone it appears that debug mode is enabled and that USB storage is not on.

6. After the phone is connected go inside the “InterceptFroyoRoot v0.2” and select START_ROOT. Follow the steps and everything should be fine.

PLEASE DONATE SO I CAN KEEP MAKING THIS TUTORIALS

Intercept recovery for newbies

In this post I will be talking about what a recovery is and the different types of recoveries that exist out there for the Samsung intercept.

-What is a recovery?
Well, a recovery is the screen that appears in your phone that lets you install updates, ROMs (which is comparable to an operating system like windows XP or Ubuntu in terms of computers and most of the time change how your phone looks and function) , make backups of your data, install kernels, etc.

-What is a kernel?
A kernel is basically the bridge between applications and the data processing at the hardware level. Is the part that communicates hardware (the touchscreen, speaker, touchpad, etc. ) with the software (what you see in the screen)

-Why do I have to install a custom recovery?
The stock recovery, which is the one that comes originally with the phone, does not let you do much, besides for installing original updates and cleaning the phone’s cache. That is why to do more complicated stuff, like installing a new kernel or installing a new theme on the phone, you need a custom recovery that gives you more options.

-How can I get into recovery mode?
Each type of phone has a different way in which you can enter into recovery mode. In the case of the Samsung Intercept you first have to turn off the phone, and then make sure that the phone is not charging or connected to the computer. After all that, you press volume down + call button + end button. You cannot press the buttons at the same time, you firs have the press volume down (leave it press) then you press the call button (leave it press) and then you press the end bottom, the one to the right of the call button, and at that moment you leave all the buttons press at the same time until the recovery screens comes out.

-How do I know which recovery do I have?
Knowing which recovery you have is critical if you are going to flash (install) a new kernel or a new ROM because sometimes they are not compatible and you phone can break. If you have never change anything on the phone, your phone should have the stock kernel (the one that comes originally with the phone) and you can make sure of that by going to recovery mode and checking that you have only the basic options (reboot system, apply sdcard: update.zip , wipe date and wipe cache partition) . If you have a custom recovery you will have more options compared to the stock, up to know the only recoveries that I know are revoveryv14 and cm01. The reocveryv14 was the first to come out is simpler and does not have all the features that the cm01 has. The cm01 is the best one and you can recognize it by the black background and white letters that it has.

-Should I install custom recovery?
I do not recommend installing a custom recovery if you are not going to use it. Why? Well there are risks when you are installing a recovery, the phone can broke in the process or you can lose all of your data.

All the answers you need when updating to froyo 2.2 on the VM Samsung Intercept

The Samsung intercept for virgin mobile is finally getting froyo 2.2 but.. What is the meaning of that? What difference will it make on my phone compared to the previous version (2.1)? What if the update did not show off on my phone? This and much more questions would be answer on this simple but very useful blog.
-Why should I update to froyo 2.2? What is the difference between froyo 2.2 and 2.1 on my Samsung intercept?
Going to froyo is a big step, it will your phone performance significantly. How? First of all the phone will be faster performing tasks, from making a call to playing a game (like angry birds). Another good thing (of the many) that froyo will bring to your phone will be more battery life. At some cases even your internet speed will improve. So, should you update to 2.2 froyo? Probably yes. But keep in mind there are some downsides.
-What are the risks of updating to froyo in your Samsung intercept?
When one is making any change there is always some risks. Updating to froyo also has its risks and downsides (very few of them). In the process of updating, always there is a possibility that it may brick your phone, meaning that there a possibility that the phone will get stuck in the screen that appears when you start the phone or that the phone does not starts again. That should not happen if you are installing the original VM froyo to the Samsung intercept with the original 2.1 version. WARNING – IF YOU INSTALL FROYO AND THE PHONE RUNS OUT OF BATTERY IN THE PROSSESS YOUR PHONE WILL BRICK, SO MAKE SURE YOU CHARGE FULLY THE PHONE BEFORE INSTALLING FROYO. Also there are some features that you won’t have on froyo.
-What features froyo does not have compared to the ones that 2.1 have?
The most important features that froyo does not have is the quick bottoms (Wi-Fi, Silence, Bluetooth, etc. ) in top of the notification bar that the 2.1 does have. The lock screen will change from the one that you slide up to the one that you slide to the side. The signal strength, the Wi-Fi icon and the battery-life icon also will change to ones simpler and not as good looking as the ones of the 2.1. Overall with froyo you will be able to do the same and much more than with 2.1 installed, the only difference will be some graphic changes.
-I want to update to froyo but the update does not appears on my phone, what can I do?
If you have the original version of 2.1 on your Samsung intercept and you did not have not got the update notification yet the first thing you have to do is go to SETTING>ABOUT PHONE> SYSTEM UPDATE> UPDATE ANDROID or go to SETTING>ABOUT PHONE> UPDATE ANDROID. If that does not work for you then you have to manually download the update by clicking this link http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GGPI8HNN and then try by putting it on your sd card’s main folder . After that go to recovery mode by turning off the phone and then pressing volume down + call key plus end key (without having the phone charging) , when you are in recovery mode press apply update.zip. If that does not work (it gives you signature error) try renaming the update.zip file to “update” only or “Update” or “Update.zip”. If that does not work ether then you have to install a custom recovery and then manually flash the update.
